Dead seals have been found along the shores of the Caspian Sea.

“Today, near the city beach of Fort-Shevchenko, locals discovered the bodies of three adult seals. It’s the same story every fall…” — wrote Azamat Sarsenbaev.

As a reminder, from March 29 to April 26, 2024, a total of 209 dead seals were found along the Caspian Sea coast in the Tupkaragan region.

Previously, in December 2022, reports indicated over 2,500 dead seals along the Caspian coast of Dagestan. Pathological examinations of the found seals revealed that they were in good health at the time of their death, which occurred approximately two to three weeks before they washed ashore.

The Deputy Director for Research at the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography, Vyacheslav Bizikov, reported that studies indicated the animals perished due to natural gas emissions typical of the Caspian Sea basin. The intensity of these emissions sharply increases during earthquakes. In low-wind conditions, these emissions create gas-laden air lenses above the sea surface, where seals suffocate.
