The undefeated Irish UFC fighter Ian Garry (15-0), competing in the welterweight division, will put an end to the impressive streak of early victories of Kazakhstan's Shavkat Rakhmonov (18-0), as reported by Vesti.kz and Vringe.com.
Their match is set to take place on the night of December 7-8 in Las Vegas, USA, and will serve as a co-main event for UFC 310.
"With his footwork, Garry will aim to keep the fight at a distance, avoiding exchanges and actively using kicks. Unfortunately for Garry, Rakhmonov, with his reach advantage, could strike him from afar, although in such a case, the Kazakh will need to showcase precision and strategy to avoid being caught by his opponent's heavy artillery. Clearly, Shavkat will not limit himself to fighting at range and will attempt to close the distance, executing hand combinations. He excels in clinch situations and is at least on par with the Irishman in wrestling skills, while surpassing him in grappling. In other words, Garry should avoid allowing his opponent into the mid/close range. He might try to extend the fight into the 4-5 rounds, hoping that the Kazakh's stamina falters. At least he should give it a shot. Considering their styles, the fight may resemble Rakhmonov's encounter with Thompson. Ian is a far better wrestler than Stephen, so it’s unlikely that Shavkat will finish him before the halfway mark. However, everything else is relatively similar. We predict that the Kazakh will not secure a finish for the first time, but he will still confirm his contender status. Our forecast for the Rakhmonov-Garry fight: Shavkat wins by decision," the publication notes.
It’s worth mentioning that Rakhmonov has fought 18 MMA bouts and won all of them by finish. Currently, he holds the third spot in the division's rankings, while his opponent is ranked seventh.
Recall that initially, the Kazakh was set to fight UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad (24-3). Their bout was supposed to headline a numbered event, but the American withdrew due to health issues.
