MMA coach Said Saparov, who assisted (19-0), commented on Ian Garry's (16-1) performance during their fight at UFC 310, as reported by Shavkat Rakhmonov Vesti.kz.
Their bout took place on December 8 in Las Vegas and ended with Rakhmonov winning by unanimous decision. This victory marked the first non-knockout win in the Kazakhstani's career.
"Did Garry surprise me? Not really. I understood that he had a goal and motivation. I knew he was the type of guy who moves forward. Someone else might not have taken advantage of the weaknesses that Shavkat displayed in this fight. For instance, the injury. Shavkat also fought with an injury against Thompson, but Thompson couldn't capitalize on it, while Garry did. He approached it stylistically correctly. But he was afraid. I could see that he wasn't taking risks as much as he could. He didn't engage in an open brawl," Saparov stated in an interview with "Sport of Schrodinger."
Initially, Rakhmonov was supposed to face the reigning UFC champion Belal Muhammad (24-3), but he contracted an infection in his leg and had to withdraw from the fight.
As a result, Rakhmonov secured his 19th victory in MMA and climbed to the second spot in the UFC welterweight rankings.
