The specialized inter-district court for criminal cases in the Karaganda region found senior operatives of the criminal police department guilty under Article 146, Part 2, Clause 1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan. They were convicted for cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment, as well as for the torture committed by a group of individuals or by prior agreement.
“The court sentenced them to three years of imprisonment in a medium-security correctional facility. The convicted individuals have been stripped of their rank of police captain. They are required to pay compensation to the victims,” the court reported.
The convicted police officers have filed an appeal, but the court upheld the original sentence.
It is worth noting that in November, a Karaganda major was deprived of his freedom and rank for torturing a prisoner.
