The latest preliminary version of Skype for Windows includes a message stating: "Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available." Microsoft has not yet commented on the situation or announced any plans to shut down the iconic service.
"Skype was launched in 2003 and for many years remained the most popular messaging service. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion and attempted to integrate it into various products such as Windows, Windows Phone, and Xbox," the message reads.
Over the past decade, Skype has undergone numerous changes and updates, including attempts to integrate with the "Phone" and "Messages" apps on Windows 10 Mobile to compete with iMessage. However, in recent years, interest in Skype has waned. Microsoft has struggled to position it as a viable solution during the pandemic, and many users have switched to more modern platforms.
