The champion of the UFC in the lightweight division, Islam Makhachev (27-1), after yet another title defense, has decided to move up to heavier divisions of the league to claim additional belts. The Dagestani fighter even mentioned a potential transition to middleweight. However, the promotion's president, Dana White , believes it would be preferable to see Makhachev in the welterweight category, where the Kazakh fighter Shavkat Rakhmonov (19-0) competes, as reported by Vesti.kz .
After defending his title against Renato Moicano (20-6), Makhachev hinted again at his desire to become a double champion to solidify his legacy. This time, however, the Russian fighter went a step further and sensationally called out the middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis (22-2), hoping to secure a third title.
Dana White expressed skepticism regarding the 33-year-old athlete's plan to jump two weight classes up. The UFC boss noted that a move to the welterweight division would be a better idea.
"He wants to move up to middleweight? I’m not sure about that. If he wants to compete in welterweight, we can discuss it. But moving to middleweight is a whole different level," White's words are quoted by Bloody Elbow .
Should the Dagestani decide to test himself in the welterweight division, he could very well face the winner of the bout between Shavkat Rakhmonov and Belal Muhammad (24-3).
Recall that Makhachev last fought on January 19 at UFC 311 in the USA, finishing Brazilian Renato Moicano in the first round. Thus, he set a record in the division for the most title defenses.
Did Shavkat Rakhmonov "choose" another country instead of Kazakhstan?
