In 2022, Tigran Keosayan made a series of statements that caused a stir in Kazakhstan. Specifically, he remarked that Kazakhstan should be "grateful to Russia for its existence." This was perceived by public figures and politicians in Kazakhstan as an insult and interference in the country's internal affairs.

Following this, Keosayan was placed on the list of undesirable persons (persona non grata) in Kazakhstan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that his rhetoric does not align with the spirit of strategic partnership between the two countries.

In addition to the entry ban to Kazakhstan, since 2022, the Russian director has also been included in the sanction lists of European countries.
