“February 1 is the deadline that President Trump announced earlier. Tomorrow he will impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada and a 10% tariff on China,” said White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt at a briefing.
According to Trump, these measures are aimed at combating illegal immigration and drug trafficking, particularly the synthetic drug fentanyl, which is reportedly coming from China.
The president also clarified that a final decision on whether oil imports from Mexico and Canada will be subject to tariffs has not yet been made. This will depend on the situation with oil prices and how these countries will interact with the U.S. in the future.
In response to these measures, Canada has already prepared a list of American goods worth $105 billion that will face retaliatory tariffs. Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly also emphasized that this situation could lead to economic consequences for both countries.
Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard warned that the imposition of tariffs could seriously harm American automotive companies, especially giants like General Motors and Ford Motor, which produce 88% of the pickups sold in the United States.
