Coal industry crisis: production is declining while prices are on the rise.

The production of solid fuel in Kazakhstan has been declining for the second consecutive year, while prices continue to rise, reports Orda.kz, citing EnergyProm.

  • Pavlodar region – 67 million tons;
  • Karaganda region – 36.5 million tons;
  • Abaï region – 7.6 million tons.

The remaining regions produced only 1.5 million tons.

Meanwhile, prices continue to rise for the seventh consecutive month.

“In December 2024, they increased by another 0.8%. The sharpest jump occurred in September — by 2.6%,”
analysts note.

Overall, over the year, the price of coal has risen by 10.4%, marking the highest increase since 2018. The steepest rise has hit the pockets of residents in the Aktobe region and eastern areas (+24.6% and 15.8%, respectively).

Thus, a ton of solid fuel in Aktobe is sold for an average of 23,000 tenge.

Despite the country's gasification, 18% of households still use coal for heating. In some regions, this figure exceeds half of all families. Meanwhile, a new increase in utility prices, including heating and gas, is expected in 2025. The price of AI-92 gasoline will also rise.
