The famous high-altitude ice rink "Medeo" is set to close for renovations. According to the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, the work will take three years, reports Kazpravda.kz citing “24KZ”
Olzhas Bektenov added that the renovation will enhance the technical specifications of the arena, ensuring it meets the requirements of the International Skating Union for hosting international speed skating and figure skating competitions.
In particular, the functional capabilities of the ice stadium will be expanded to accommodate ball hockey competitions, world championships in ice speedway, and various cultural-sporting events, such as ice shows and demonstration performances.
The area of "Medeo" exceeds 10,000 square meters. The rink is situated at an altitude of 1,691 meters above sea level and is the highest operating open stadium, as well as the leader in the number of established world records in speed skating.
