“In a recent study, researchers found that subjects adhering to a Mediterranean diet developed distinctly different gut bacteria patterns compared to those following a typical Western diet. These changes were linked to improved cognitive abilities and memory,” the study states.

According to the experiment's results, rats fed a Mediterranean diet for 14 weeks showed an increase in four beneficial types of gut bacteria and a decrease in five other types.

Specifically, higher levels of Saccharimonas bacteria were associated with improved cognitive functions, while a greater amount of Bifidobacterium correlated with memory decline.

“Additionally, the group that followed the Mediterranean diet demonstrated better cognitive flexibility (the ability to adapt to new information) and improved working memory function compared to those on a Western diet. They also had lower levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol,” the researchers explained.
