Surnames without Russian endings like "-ov" and "-ev" are gaining support in Kyrgyzstan, promoting national identity and cultural heritage.

In Kyrgyzstan, an alternative format for writing surnames and patronymics according to traditional rules has been proposed. The bill has been approved by the committee of the Jogorku Kenesh, the local governmental body, as reported by Orda.kz.
В Кыргызстане поддерживают национальные фамилии без русских окончаний «-ов» и «-ев».

Parents will have the option to choose one of the traditional naming methods:

  • The surname is derived from the grandfather's name, and "уулу" (for boys) or "кызы" (for girls) is added to the father's name;
  • The word "теги" is appended to the father's name, followed by "уулу" or "кызы";
  • There is also a possibility to add possessive endings to the father's name: "дын/тын," "дин/тин," "дүн/түн" (for boys) and "дан/тан," "ден/тен," "дөн/төн" (for girls).
At the same time, familiar surnames and patronymics with endings like "-ов," "-ев," "-вич," "-вна" will be preserved — citizens will have the freedom to choose which format to adopt.

The initiator of the bill, Mirlan Samykojo, emphasized that the changes aim to preserve national traditions, but no one will be required to change their surname.

One of the speakers in the Kyrgyz Parliament has already discarded his surname in the Russian style. Nurlanbek Turgunbek уулу previously had the surname Shakiev.
