The kangaroo thief remains in custody. The lawyers of Ivan Nekrasov – the same thief who stole baby kangaroos from two zoos in September – requested that he be placed under house arrest, but the court did not find this request reasonable.
- The court reviewed the legality of the ruling from the Zavolzhsky District Court of Yaroslavl dated October 4, 2024, which ordered Nekrasov to be held in custody until November 27, 2024, - said the court's press service regarding the details of the hearing on October 21.
The judges examined all the arguments of the appeal, listened to the defendant's lawyers, but upheld the decision: the thief must remain in custody until November 27, 2024. During this time, an investigation is expected to be conducted.
Incidentally, the session was closed – this was requested by Nekrasov's lawyer. The reason was that the defense intended to disclose information about the health of their client. Perhaps these facts were the basis for the requests for his release from custody.
It was also revealed in court that Ivan Nekrasov faces a second charge: not only for the theft from the Yaroslavl Zoo but also for an incident in Kaluga. This was reported to journalists by the defendant's lawyer, Ekaterina Sentisheva.
“Currently, he has also been charged with stealing a kangaroo from a zoo in the Kaluga region. He is accused under part 3 of article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The charge was reclassified from theft with illegal entry into a premises to large-scale theft.”
This was made possible because the stolen baby kangaroos were valued. The Kaluga kangaroos were assessed at 550,000 rubles, while the Yaroslavl Kros was valued at 180,000 rubles.
The story of the stolen kangaroos made headlines in late September. At that time, three infants went missing from two zoos. The thief was apprehended by the police at a train station in the Vladimir region, carrying a large checkered bag. Inside were two baby kangaroos, one of which was dead, and the other was terrified. Nekrasov managed to sell the Yaroslavl Kros to a private zoo in Korolev. Fortunately, the baby was found and retrieved from the owners, who likely knew about the seller's criminal background. Kros was returned to the Yaroslavl Zoo, where at that time a Kaluga baby kangaroo was also being rehabilitated.
Now, the Yaroslavl Kros has completed the necessary quarantine period and has returned to the enclosure with its parents. Zoo staff captured this moment on video. The baby emerged from the carrier and cautiously approached its parents, who sniffed it carefully and recognized it. Just a few seconds later, the happy family was joyfully hopping around the enclosure together.
- Kros is feeling well, and his health is not a concern, - zoo representatives told the journalist from “KP”.
The Kaluga baby kangaroo has also returned home. After a course of treatment in Yaroslavl, it was handed over to representatives of the Kaluga Bird Park. A carrier was prepared for the baby, in which it felt very secure. Now, the baby kangaroo is back with its parents, and it is promised that it will soon receive a name.
