The exact number of fatalities from the stampede remains unknown. Some sources report 15 deaths, while others indicate 40. Dozens of people have been injured, with many hospitalized in critical condition.
The Prime Minister expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
“I extend my deepest sympathies to the faithful who have lost their loved ones. At the same time, I wish a speedy recovery to all those affected,” he posted on the social network X.
The opposition has placed the blame for the tragedy on the ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Kumbh Mela is the largest Hindu festival associated with a mass pilgrimage to sacred sites and ritual bathing. According to belief, bathing at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers cleanses one of sins.
The Kumbh Mela occurs every 12 years; this year's festival began on January 13 and will last until February 26. Approximately 50,000 security personnel have been deployed to maintain order at the event.
