The President of Kazakhstan received the news of the numerous human casualties from the tragedy in New Orleans with deep sorrow. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev firmly condemned this monstrous act of violence in a telegram addressed to U.S. President Joseph Biden.
On behalf of the people of Kazakhstan and personally, Tokayev expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured, as reported by Akorda on their Telegram channel.
Earlier reports indicated that in New Orleans, a driver plowed into a crowd and opened fire, resulting in fatalities and dozens of injuries. City authorities commented on the incident.
According to the Russian service of the BBC, a vehicle crashed at high speed into a crowd celebrating New Year on Bourbon Street, after which the driver exited the car and began shooting. Police returned fire. During the exchange, two police officers were injured. Authorities believe the driver intentionally targeted pedestrians to inflict maximum harm.
Homemade explosive devices were found at the scene of the incident, the FBI reported. However, they added that they do not consider the event to be a terrorist attack.
