Subsequently, the former official fled to Uzbekistan, where he was apprehended and handed over to the authorities in Kazakhstan. He will face trial in his home country for fraud and incitement to bribery. Interestingly, a case has also been initiated against Sadvakassov in the neighboring country, but for illegal entry.

“AFM employees, in coordination with the General Prosecutor's Office and in cooperation with the National Security Committee, apprehended the wanted Sadvakassov T. K. on February 25 at the ‘Kaplanbek’ checkpoint (Turkestan region) and transferred him to Kazakhstan's law enforcement agencies,” reported the Financial Monitoring Agency.

Currently, Sadvakassov is in the Shymkent detention center and will soon be transferred to Pavlodar, where he will stand trial.

Timur Sadvakassov served as the deputy akim of Aktau since 2019. News of his flight and subsequent declaration as wanted internationally emerged in early February.
