“A criminal case against 43 officials and employees of the education department of the Maktaaral district regarding the embezzlement of over 2.4 billion tenge of budget funds has been submitted to the court,” reported the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The investigation claims that the officials illegally transferred salaries to the accounts of individuals who were, in fact, not employed in the education system. Currently, the suspects have reimbursed damages amounting to 333.5 million tenge. Additionally, assets purchased with the embezzled funds, totaling 649.7 million tenge, have been seized. Thus, nearly one billion tenge has already been recovered.
It is worth noting that the Financial Monitoring Agency began the investigation back in January of last year.
