Yesterday, the Senate of Kazakhstan ratified the Memorandum of Understanding between the government of the country and the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) during a plenary session. This document formalizes the participation of the Kazakh peacekeeping contingent in the UN mission in the Golan Heights.
According to the memorandum, the UN will reimburse Kazakhstan for the costs associated with the military's participation in the peacekeeping mission. The total amount of payments will be approximately $5 million per year, of which:
- $2.4 million - payments to military personnel ($1,448 per month for each);
- $2.6 million - compensation for the use of military equipment, armaments, and property.
According to Senator Andrei Lukin, this will allow Kazakhstan to minimize budgetary costs when participating in peacekeeping operations and make cooperation with the UN economically justified.
How will the funds be distributed?
Payments to military personnel will go to the account of the Treasury Committee of the Ministry of Finance and will then be distributed through the Ministry of Defense.
Compensation for equipment and technology will be directed to the state treasury account to replenish the budget.
Thus, military personnel will personally receive payments for their participation in the mission, while the funds for the use of equipment and armaments will go to the state treasury.
