“Since the beginning of the year, 15.4 billion cubic meters of water have flowed into Lake Balkhash, which is 4 billion cubic meters more than the previous year. Of this amount, 3.3 billion cubic meters were received during the flood. A total of 17 billion cubic meters of water have entered the Caspian Sea since the start of the year. For the first time in a decade, the Kapshagay Reservoir in the Almaty region has reached 100% capacity, accumulating over 18 billion cubic meters of water,” reported the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
During the flood, 80 million cubic meters of water were directed to the Kamysh-Samarskie lakes in the West Kazakhstan region. From the Ulytau region, 839 million cubic meters of water were sent to the Kyzylorda region. As a result, for the first time in history, this water reached the lake systems of the Kyzylorda region via the Sarysu River.
“Approximately 2.5 billion cubic meters of water have been directed to the North Aral Sea this year, which is over 400 million cubic meters more than in 2023. Additionally, the use of water-saving technologies has allowed farmers in the Kyzylorda region to save 200 million cubic meters of water, which were also sent to the North Aral,” the agency noted.
In total, since the beginning of the year, more than 4.7 billion cubic meters of water have been directed to the lake systems of the Kyzylorda region. In comparison, last year this figure was around 4.3 million cubic meters.
